Understanding. Of what? Security? Compliance? I’ll spare you from any dictionary definitions because I really want to focus on two aspects: (1) an understanding of defined objectives, and (2) an understanding of implementations. It should be noted that these objectives require both!
With respect to #1: Experience illustrates that many organizations have (at least somewhat of) an understanding of what needs to be accomplished.
With respect to #2: Experience illustrates that most organizations have no idea of what is required to implement proper controls that satisfy compliance objectives.
